Do you need a license?

California does not license this trade at the state level. That does not mean no rules apply — counties and cities may require a local business licence or registration, and employers may require certifications that are not government-issued. If you plan to contract directly with the public, check the local requirements for the city or county you will work in.

BAR licenses automotive repair dealers, stations, and three narrow technician categories (Smog Check inspector, Smog Check repair technician, vehicle safety systems technician). A general service technician (SOC 49-3023) needs none of these; ASE certification is voluntary and industry-run.

Steps to get licensed

  1. No state license is required to work as a general automotive service technician
  2. Complete a community college or trade school automotive program, or learn on the job
  3. Optionally earn ASE certifications, which employers commonly prefer but the state does not require
  4. If you perform Smog Check or vehicle safety inspections, obtain the specific BAR inspector/technician license
  5. Shops must be registered as Automotive Repair Dealers with BAR; that registration belongs to the business, not the technician

What it costs

The figures below are what the state charges. Training is separate and quotes vary by provider — a community-college programme and a private trade school can differ by thousands for the same licence.
