Do you need a license?

Florida does not license this trade at the state level. That does not mean no rules apply — counties and cities may require a local business licence or registration, and employers may require certifications that are not government-issued. If you plan to contract directly with the public, check the local requirements for the city or county you will work in.

Florida has no carpenter occupational license. The CILB's state contractor categories (General/Building/Residential/roofing/AC/plumbing/mechanical/sheet metal/solar/specialty and others) do not include carpentry; working as an employee requires no license. Taking on structural work directly requires a CILB or local contractor license.

Steps to get licensed

  1. No state license is required to work as a carpenter (employee or helper).
  2. If you contract directly with property owners, determine whether the work falls under a CILB contractor category or local licensing requirements.
  3. Minor handyman work (contract under $2,500, casual, minor or inconsequential in nature) is exempt from the state contractor license.
  4. Structural carpentry and additions generally require a Residential or Specialty Structure contractor license, or a local license.
