California HVAC Technician License: Requirements, Cost & Timeline
California requires a state license for this trade. Here is every step, fee and hour it takes — and what it pays once you are licensed.
Do you need a license?
Yes. The credential is the CSLB C-20 Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning Contractor License, issued by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Working without it is a violation in California and can carry fines or a stop-work order, so the sequence below matters: training first, then the exam, then the application.
Steps to get licensed
- Accumulate at least 4 years (within the last 10 years) of journey-level hvac technician experience that a former employer or contractor can certify on the Certification of Work Experience form
- Submit the CSLB original application with the $450 application fee for one classification
- Pass the law and business exam plus the trade exam (administered by PSI) after CSLB accepts the application
- File a $25,000 contractor surety bond and proof of workers' compensation insurance (or a valid exemption)
- Pay the $200 initial license fee (sole owner) and receive the license; renew every 2 years for $450
What it costs
The figures below are what the state charges. Training is separate and quotes vary by provider — a community-college programme and a private trade school can differ by thousands for the same licence.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application fee | $450 |
| License / certification fee | $200 |
| Renewal fee | $450 |
| Total state fees | $650 |
The exam fee is set by the testing vendor, not the state, and is not included above.

Keeping it valid
The licence renews every 2 years and the renewal fee is $450. California does not recognize out-of-state contractor licenses generally, but CSLB has reciprocity agreements with Arizona, Louisiana and Nevada that can waive the trade exam; the law and business exam and experience verification still apply.
